Monroe held his hands up. “I want to clarify that I had nothing to do with this, John. I swear on my honor.”
“She’s strategically unpredictable.” Rodgers sighed heavily.
“Commodore, it is my understanding that the concept originated with you.”
“Aye, it did,” admitted Rodgers. “It did.”
The Secretary rolled his eyes and gave a half smile. “Well, sir, your efforts have been remarkably commendable.”
A loud and sharply rung bell brought immediate silence to all the guests, servants, and music. Governor Lloyd stepped upon the orchestra platform, and with a broad smile, faced the crowd. Everyone stood and turned toward the Governor.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in extending the warmest of welcomes to our esteemed guest of honor, Major Zebulon Pike. His tireless dedication to mapping and understanding the vast frontiers of our young nation is nothing short of remarkable. Tonight, let us celebrate not only his accomplishments, but the boundless potential of our glorious land. Welcome, Major Zebulon Pike, to this gathering of minds and hearts, where we come together to share in the joy of discovery and the promise of our nation’s future.”
A powerfully built man in full dress Army officer uniform with a tall red collar that sat atop a black tunic with gold piping stepped onto the stage. Zebulon Pike had closely and stylishly cropped auburn hair, sharp facial features, and a commanding presence. He towered above the governor. His smile seemed bright, genuine, and relaxed.
