So much stuff happened between the Founding and the Civil War that could have easily nudged the country over the existential edge. The only thing saving it was the character of the people who lived it.
To me, it is very similar to our own time. The nation is passing into another phase in its life with a new generation having to accept the torch whether they want to or not.
Listen to the characters, especially the historical ones. They were people, just like us, who survived many times in spite of themselves. The truth is sometimes, make that many times, harsh. But the last living signer of The Declaration of Independence provides us with some hope.
